I've debated writing this blog over several times over because of the controversy that comes with it, that being said I hope not to offend anyone but I feel I need to say my peace.
Mental health is a real issue and with all the terrible things going on in the world, it needs to stop being swept under the rug.
The second season of "13 Reasons Why" has now been out for a month. If you haven't watched it yet, I suggest you not waste your time with it. This entire series is said to be made to raise awareness, but it does anything it glories mental illness and makes it seem like an appealing designer handbag everyone wants to have. This first season of the series came under scrutiny for never including warnings of violence and on top of that including incredibly graphic content ignoring specific instruction not to. These scenes include suicide and multiple different rape scenes. After all the scrutiny it received from the first season the second season included a short message telling you if you struggle with any of these issues that maybe it is not the show for you watch and then also that if you feel these things that you should get help, and that would be wonderful if you couldn't just click right through it and skip it is I'm sure half of the users did.
If you don't believe that 13 Reasons had detrimental effects, after its first season then think about the fact that suicide rose a ridiculous 20 percent only 19 days after the show's release.
As a person who struggled with depression and anxiety for the grand majority of my life I can promise you there is absolutely nothing glamorous about it. Also, I can tell you that sometimes the scars that you don't see absolutely hurt the most. You NEVER know what anyone else is going through and you also never know how what you do or say to a person will affect them. I am not just talking about negative situations, I mean positive ones as well. You never know how just smiling at someone or telling them hello will improve their day. Be mindful of how you treat other people.
I firmly believe that the biggest reason we have such a problem with depression, suicide, anxiety and everything else is due to our society. My generation and the ones after me have been raised in a society of hate. It has been nearly 20 years and we still argue every single day about racism. There has never been a time that I don't remember being at war. Bullying no longer stops when you get off the school bus social media allows it to literally follow you every move you make. School shootings are so prominent that Columbine-deemed the worst school shooting ever-no longer even makes the top 10. Tv shows about depression, suicide, eating disorders and more health issues have become all the rage. Arguing about anything and everything because everyone has become hypersensitive in everyone's favorite pass time.
Think about all of the information I just told you. That is not normal, that should NEVER be normal.
We need to think long and hard about what we want the future to hold for our kids and grandkids and the generations that will live on long after we leave. A change needs to be made.
Please please please don't be scared to ask for help and don't think the only thing is a permanent answer to a temporary problem.
