This week was my first official week living in New York on my own! I know I've been slacking on blogs a little, but with good reason. Since school got out life has been as much of a whirlwind as ever; between a quick cousin family reunion at Disney, my big's wedding in Florida, getting an internship, dying my hair for the first time, my little brother graduating high school, and moving completely out of my Auburn apartment. (I'm sure there's a few things I missed but I think you get the point.)
So what am I doing in New York?
An unpaid internship for apparel design with a children's wear company called Babyfair. Yes, I do love it and I never want to leave New York now. I want to learn as much as I can so when I graduate in May I can end right back up in my favorite city that never sleeps.
Take a look into my first week!
The first day I learned a lot, but mainly I was trying to get comfortable in a new environment and keep up with the pace. On the first day my biggest task was to measure 9 different children swear garments and check if the factory had done a good job. It took me 5 hours and the technical designer said she was shocked it didn't take me longer. Update-factories usually don't do exactly what you tell them to do. On the first day I wore a green Kate Spade sundress because I wanted to be sure to keep Kate Spade close to my heart on my first day.
Day two I was able to keep up with the pace a little bit better, but it was definitely more fast paced. I dressed the mannequins in all the outfit I took measurements for the day before to make sure everything fit properly. I also did intake of all the samples we had been shipped that day and made sure they looked perfect to be inspected by the buyers. I also helped to organize the meeting room by making sure there were enough copies of the designs for the buyers to look at when they came in. I did mess up today and print the copies front and back by accident and then I had to rip out 30 staples. I wore a Lilly Pulitzer skirt and coordinating top.
The third day I learned that there are more shades of colors than you can ever imagine. I helped by organizing all the colors for the different prints this season to be sent to the factory. We had three different sets of prints this week to send to the factory on Friday. I also helped to match Pantone color swatches to colors that had not yet been named not the prints. This day I wore gray pinstripe pants, a black top, and a fun white blazer.
Finally, Friday was the day we sent all the prints and color cards to the factory. We worked tirelessly to make sure that all the prints and color cards were done. They got done right in the nick of time. I also got to go to lunch with two of the designers at Babyfair, on what they call adventurous food Friday. I wore a little white romper.
Friday was also the day my best friend Hope came to New York for her internship starting today!! We had all kinds of fun adventures over the weekend, Maddie came in from Staton Island for the weekend to join in on the fun. We went to the top of the Empire State building, ate brunch at a rooftop garden with a view of the city, watched Frozen on Broadway, walked Rockefeller Plaza, ate at Ellen's stardust diner, watched a Yankees vs. Red socks game, went to Mass at St. Patricks, and so much more!
I had an Amazing first week in New York City and I cannot wait to share what else is to come with all of you!!
